Ukraine
Disaster Overview
The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022 with Russia’s invasion, has caused widespread destruction and suffering. Millions of people have been displaced, with many fleeing to neighboring countries or enduring the dangers of conflict zones. Cities like Kyiv, Mariupol, and Kharkiv have experienced heavy bombings, leaving homes, hospitals, and schools in ruins. The war has caused significant loss of life, with thousands of civilians killed and many more injured. The ongoing violence has led to an escalating humanitarian crisis, with millions facing extreme shortages of food, water, shelter, and medical care.
Acts of Mercy Response
Since the first week of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, AOMI has been on the ground serving Ukrainians in the Kyiv region, providing both humanitarian aid and supporting church planting efforts. In 2024, our team launched a discipleship school with 40 students, equipping leaders to serve their communities. We also continued to meet essential needs by distributing 1,745 meals to children at camps, soldiers, and community leaders. Our teams provided trauma care support, facilitated children’s summer camps, hosted women’s retreats, and supported families across Ukraine. This year, 101 individuals received AOMI training, 25 people completed trauma healing training, and 150 backpacks were packed for children to be distributed in early 2025. Most importantly, we witnessed 39 people come to faith in Jesus, prayed with 472 individuals, and celebrated 24 baptisms. In total, we served 1,941 people, bringing hope and restoration to communities in need.
Story from the Field
Paster Sergii was preparing to leave the country as a volunteer missionary to Spain before the war in Ukraine. As a father of six, he and his family had the means to flee Ukraine. However, Sergi's wife demanded that they stay in Kyiv to fight, not in the military, but as the church, fighting for God's people. Sergii was still determining what to do and struggled to decide whether to stay in Kyiv or go to Spain. During prayer, he heard the Lord say, "This house that you have built will be protected in this war and will remain untouched."
In a situation where fellow pastors had left the country, this word from the Lord began Sergi's commitment to the Ukrainian church and the basement church in his house. He offered his basement to church members during lockdown for several weeks at the beginning of the war.
Day and night, Sergi and Ira provided food, water, medical care, and spiritual support for these in-country refugees.
Around the same time, Sergi's kids told him that starting a church was the only way to fight. Sergi agreed to start a church if more than 25 people attended. The first service consisted of 27 members. The church has now grown from 27 members to over 500 committed members.
With the help of AOM, Sergii continues to support the family of God by providing food, water, medical assistance, and spiritual care in Kyiv and surrounding cities.
